Established in the year 2000, nestled in the heart of the nation's capital, FoxWise Technologies Inc. is dedicated to initiatives and embodying a vision of technological advancement intertwined with cultural respect and community empowerment. As an Indigenous-owned enterprise, its roots run deep, reflecting a commitment to provide technology services to federal government departments and also to uplift and support the diverse tapestry of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis communities across Canada.
Since 2019, FoxWise has expanded its capabilities by leveraging Compugen’s expertise, scale, and agility, enabling them to undertake more complex technology projects.
“So, what happens when two visionary leaders unite to empower Indigenous communities through technology?” FoxWise and Compugen's story answers this question with a tale of innovation, collaboration, shared goals, and a deep-seated commitment to uplifting the Indigenous community. It highlights that when businesses listen and put their shoulders behind meaningful causes, they can drive profound and lasting change.
The Genesis of a Transformative Partnership
It all began with a serendipitous conversation between neighbours. Sam was introduced to Compugen by his neighbor, Teri Croucher, Client Director, Sales at the company. During a casual evening chat, they discovered their shared professional backgrounds in IT and sales. When Sam mentioned he was the founder and president of FoxWise, Teri immediately saw an opportunity and arranged a meeting with her boss, Julie Zanatta, Sales Director, at Compugen.
Sam and Julie quickly found common ground, especially in their work with the federal government. After a few productive meetings, Julie suggested that Sam meet Harry Zarek. Sam, who had heard of Harry’s reputation as a respected and keen businessman, was intrigued. He made the trip to Richmond Hill to meet Harry at Compugen’s impressive new office. Despite the grandeur of the office, Harry’s unassuming nature stood out to Sam—he worked from a cubicle in the sales area and drove a ten-year-old Toyota Camry, reflecting his down-to-earth personality.
Their first meeting was memorable. Harry expressed his desire to help develop the Indigenous workforce, a mission that resonated deeply with Sam, whose goal had been to nurture Indigenous talent since founding FoxWise 25 years prior. Harry’s sincerity and genuine interest in supporting Indigenous communities made a strong impression on Sam, leading to further discussions about a potential partnership. This culminated in Compugen acquiring a vested interest in FoxWise, marking the beginning of a meaningful collaboration.
From Connection to Collaboration
The companies’ relationship flourished on a foundation of trust and mutual respect. Compugen’s leadership was genuinely committed to supporting Fox Wise’s growth and the broader goal of empowering Indigenous communities. This was not a mere business transaction, but a partnership rooted in shared values and a common mission to drive meaningful change. The synergy between FoxWise and Compugen brought significant benefits to both organizations, enabling them to achieve more together than they could have separately.
“By putting our expertise behind FoxWise, we do our part in strengthening the community – developing IT skills, creating jobs and careers, and bridging the technological gap.”
Over the years, Harry and Sam's relationship evolved from a professional partnership to a personal friendship. Harry, as a mentor to Sam, is always available for guidance and support. Harry’s accessibility and willingness to help depict the level of dedication from Harry despite his busy schedule, which underscores the depth of their bond.
A Commitment Beyond Business
The partnership between FoxWise and Compugen is about more than just business. Harry’s vision to extend Compugen’s success to Indigenous communities aligns perfectly with Sam’s lifelong mission to develop Indigenous talent, foster self-reliance and bridge technological gaps within communities.
FoxWise prioritizes reinvesting for impact, redefining what it means to do business. By supporting Indigenous businesses, they are able to grow donations and provide training within these communities. Their approach goes beyond seeking profit; they are dedicated to investing in the future. Believing in active community engagement, FoxWise consistently involves and uplifts the communities they serve. Their reinvestment strategy is designed to yield tangible results, driving real-world positive change.
This collaboration has led to initiatives like the FOXWISE Information Technology Community Service Program (FIT), aimed at training and empowering First Nation technicians. Such programs exemplify the tangible impact of their partnership, fostering skills development and creating new opportunities within Indigenous communities.
“Our initiatives demonstrate Compugen’s commitment to the Indigenous businesses and communities of Canada with clear and tangible impacts. Being in the business of technology, we leverage the tools at our disposal to empower people with technology and Internet access and work towards digital prosperity.
We are constantly exploring new ways to engage with Indigenous communities, with the support of our partners and through our with relationship with FoxWise, whether it is skills development, community building, employment, or supporting Indigenous business.”
