[RICHMOND HILL, ON] March 28, 2024—Compugen Inc., the nation's largest privately-owned and operated Technology Ally, is thrilled to provide a suite of new technology to support the Centre of Excellence for Black Student Achievement’s Collaborative Inquiry Room at the Toronto District School Board.

The Centre of Excellence for Black Student Achievement

The Centre of Excellence for Black Student Achievement is the first of its kind in Canada’s public education system. The concept was first proposed at the District by the Enhancing Equity Task Force and in June 2020 trustees with the Toronto District School Board approved funding to create the new Centre of Excellence for Black Student Achievement. Since then, it has become a safe space for students, staff, and families to learn, engage, and create.

With the infusion of new technology equipment donated by Compugen, students will be able to further engage in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math (STEAM) activities including virtual reality and utilize creative new media and design tools.

“The Centre intentionally leads programming that supports the improvement of outcomes of Black students in our District – meaning access to resources and introducing students to various pathways,” said Karen Murray, System Superintendent, Equity, Anti-Racism and Anti-Oppression. “We graciously accept Compugen’s donation on behalf of our many students, staff and families who will have an opportunity to not only engage with cutting-edge technology but be the producers of it.”

“It fills us with great pride to support the TDSB by providing new equipment for the Centre of Excellence for Black Student Achievement and training for staff,” said Joe Simms, Compugen’s Senior Sales Director, West + Central Public Sector. “Compugen rallies behind the mission of the Centre of Excellence for Black Student Achievement to provide students with access to emerging technology. Our objective is to amplify the Centre’s efforts toward shaping the future of education and sparking curiosity and passion for IT among its Black student population.”

The Centre of Excellence hosted a celebratory ribbon-cutting event on March 27 for students, district leaders, community members, and dignitaries to see and experience the newly updated space first-hand.
