At Compugen, , the guiding principle of "Dream, Design, Deliver" serves as a cornerstone for crafting innovative solutions. For Michael Zhang, an Advanced Solution Specialist and Pre-sale Solution Architect, this philosophy is deeply intertwined with his daily work.

In his role, Michael helps customers turn visions into reality, from the initial concept to a fully functional network infrastructure that meets today’s needs and is designed for future growth.

"I see myself primarily as a Dreamer and Designer, but also a Deliverer," Michael explains. He begins by helping customers envision their ideal network, thinking beyond immediate limitations and anticipating what they might need in the next five to seven years. "Design" is where this vision takes form — through road-mapping sessions with customer teams, selecting advanced technologies, and developing a detailed blueprint.

A Career Rooted in Innovation

Michael’s journey to Compugen began more than twenty years ago. Starting as a telecommunications engineer and then senior network consultant, he gained hands-on experience and solid knowledge of foundational technologies. Drawn to the strategic side of network and security architecture, he transitioned into a pre-sales role, where he now combines his technical expertise with a passion for client interaction.

Passion, collaboration, and an unwavering commitment to excellence fuel Michael’s drive. Continuous learning and teamwork also play pivotal roles in his professional journey, helping him stay at the cutting edge of technology.

"Ensuring my work meets or exceeds customer expectations and contributes to their success is a powerful motivator," he says. Mentorship + Learning

One of the key influences in Michael’s career at Compugen has been his mentor, a Sales Specialist at Compugen Ed Hofstede, "His belief in my abilities boosted my confidence as I transitioned from a delivery consultant to a pre-sales role," Michael recalls. This encouragement taught him the value of having someone who recognizes and nurtures potential, a lesson that continues to inspire him today.

If given the chance to switch roles with anyone at Compugen for a day, Michael would choose Dane Hobbins. Why? For his strategic vision, leadership in innovation, and ability to foster cross-departmental collaboration.

"I’d love to learn how to maintain curiosity and keep thinking big as I get older," Michael shares.

Finding Fulfillment + Looking forward Michael_Zhang

For Michael, the most fulfilling part of his role at Compugen is its impact on the company’s business success. His efforts are crucial in securing new business and driving service revenue for Network and Security Advanced Solutions in Alberta. Knowing that his work directly contributes to the company's growth brings immense satisfaction.

Looking ahead to the rest of 2024 and into 2025, Michael is excited about the potential of emerging technologies, particularly AI. "AI is opening up new opportunities but also presenting challenges we’ve never seen before," he says, eager to see how it will shape work and life in the years to come.

Beyond the Office + Fun Facts

Outside of his professional life, Michael has a range of interests. He enjoys writing ancient-style Chinese poetry, karaoke, cooking, and hiking. Balancing work and personal life comes down to effective time management. He believes in producing high-quality work well ahead of deadlines to reduce stress and prioritize tasks to stay focused on what’s most important.

Interestingly, Michael picked up snowboarding at the age of 40. It’s true! Since then, he’s made it a tradition to visit Jasper National Park each winter with family and friends to enjoy the snow.

Given the chance to pick a superpower, Michael would opt to eliminate the learning curve. "If I could instantly understand and master any technology, it would enable me to consistently provide the most innovative solutions to our customers," he notes. This supercharged ability would not only keep him ahead of the game but also fuel more substantial business outcomes.

Parting Thoughts

Michael leaves us with two of his favourite work-related quotes, which reflect Michael’s quiet determination and consistent pursuit of excellence in everything he does:

"Work hard in silence, let your success be your noise" by Frank Ocean and "Success is the sum of small efforts, repeated day in and day out" by Robert Collier.
